The Swedish National Association for Deaf, Hearing-Impaired and language-Impaired children - DHB

Language is communication leading to relation. Only when meeting others your own sense of identity awakens. Being barred from a language is to be deprived of your most important tool of communication.

It is a fact that more than 10.000 children in Sweden are deaf or hard of hearing. It is a fact that one out of twenty children has a language disorder preventing them from understanding and using the language. But in fact there is a language for all these children. Sign language is a good foundation for the development of other languages.

The national organisation DHB is for children suffering from deafness, hearing or language impairment. DHB was started by families and is still run by families. Language disability is not one’s problem but a challenge to everyone involved. DHB acts in the best interest of the whole family, during a child´s way from infancy to an adult working life.

Our aims and vision

Our aims are that children who are deaf, hearing impaired or language-impaired shall have all possibilities to participate on equal terms in our society. Important questions for DHB are:

  • The quality of the education for our children
  • Education in sign language for our families and relatives
  • Economic questions for our member families

Commitment and membership

Through membership in DHB you get in touch with families in the same situation as you. We support and learn from each other's experiences, engage us in our children's education and work for active leisure activities.

The whole family is member in one of our districts and receives information about current topics and activities. The basis for DHB's work is the commitment of our members. All members of our boards work on a non-profit basis.

Summer camp and Conferences

Every year DHB arranges a very popular summer camp where families from all over Sweden get together and exchange experiences. The program contains everything from lectures, discussions, courses in sign language and different leisure activites.

DHB also arranges several conferences every year, based on important subjects for our members.

Projects

DHB initiates and participates in several projects related to our children and youths. The projects are performed in order to improve the education of our children and to improve the understanding for our children's situation. Many of the projects are performed in cooperation with other organizations.

Organization

DHB is a national organization and consists of five regions. Every region is part of the national organization but have their own committees and activites. DHB also have two national districts (that cover all Sweden) for multi disabled respective language impaired children and their families.

DHB has an office in Örebro that is responsible for information and administration of our activities.
